John Shaeffer

John Shaeffer is an expert in designing solutions that address the challenges of today’s ever-changing technology landscape and new security requirements.  He has extensive experience with SCADA, EMS, GMS, ADMS/OMS, GIS, and Historian systems, as well as several IT platforms (server/client architecture, virtualization, hyper-converged infrastructure, cloud, etc.).  John has managed a team of engineers responsible for designing such systems and has provided technical governance of projects, proposals and contracts.  His expertise includes:

  • IT architecture design

  • System patching procedures

  • NERC CIP

  • APIs, Middleware, Front-End Processor Protocols

  • System Integration

  • RFP and software selection

  • Contract negotiations

  • Situational awareness projects

  • Hardware replacement

  • OT/OS software upgrades

  • ADMS Data Readiness

  • FAT/SAT testing and test supervision

  • System Administrator change execution

  • Environment Change Management

While at ESTA, John has assisted a major U.S. power utility in supporting its distribution network model data requirements and design.  He has also developed a roadmap report to support another utility’s 5-year ADMS vision, led an environment Change Management program, and has served as a technical advisor to multiple SCADA/EMS/GMS system replacement projects.
